Challenge
Using designed templates, layout a full six-page newspaper twice a week while communicating with a team of writers and designers on the final layout and structure of the articles. Additionally, design in-house advertisements for a brand without limitations or deadlines.

Background

On a whim, I decided to apply for the Layout Graphic Designer position with the Indiana Statesman as a way to further build my skills in Adobe InDesign and to gain additional experience outside the classroom.

Process

If you read through my Indiana Statesman logo project, you’ll recognize that this is not my masthead design. This is the masthead design prior to my redesign; however I want you to pay attention to the layout. Using templates that I aided in designing, we place student articles using InDesign, making sure everything is clean, organized, and aligned. I’ve been able to experience designing in-house advertisements, but with more freedom.

Results

This job taught me a lot more than just design; this is where I really grew my skills in InDesign and in communication with a team of writers and designers. I learned how design works in a real-world environment and I learned that not everything works perfectly every time. I adapted and overcame many obstacles and now I feel ready to whatever comes next in my career.
